Haidong is a practical one- or two-day route from Xining or Xining Caojiabao International Airport, useful for valley scenery, monastery architecture, ethnic culture and slower study stops. The main planning names are Qutan Temple, Huzhu Tu Ethnic Homeland Garden, Xunhua Yellow River valley, Salar culture, Minhe Lajia Site, Ping'an, Ledu and county-town food stops.
Pick One Theme First
If you want architecture and murals, choose Qutan Temple and give it a slow visit. Check opening, guide availability, photo rules and the order of halls before going. Do not touch murals, timber structures, offerings or religious objects. If you want folk culture, the Huzhu direction works better, but clothing, performances, food, photos and paid experiences should all follow local rules.
For Yellow River valley scenery, use the Xunhua direction. Road conditions, water level and rain matter; after rain, do not enter unmanaged riverbanks or gravel flats. Minhe and the Lajia Site are stronger for archaeology and study travel than for casual photo stops, so check whether exhibitions are open and leave time for interpretation.
Transport and Safety
Haidong is close to Xining on paper, but county-to-county transfers still take time. Do not pack Qutan Temple, Huzhu, Xunhua and Minhe into one rushed day. Xining, Haidong city areas and the airport are convenient bases; county lodging should be checked for heating, hot water, parking and cancellation terms.
Food can include beef, lamb, noodles, Qingke barley, Salar-style dishes, local snacks and halal restaurants. Read posted prices, respect halal dining practice, and ask before photographing people in markets, villages or folk-experience spaces. Haidong is most useful when treated as a quieter cultural route beside Xining, not as a drive-through filler before Qinghai Lake.
