Hulunbuir is a grassland, wetland, border-town and forest route, and it is much larger than it looks on a map. Hailar is the usual transport and supply base. From there, the classic arc runs through Chen Barag Grassland, Morigele River, Erguna Wetland, Birch Forest, Enhe, Shiwei, Heishantou, Manzhouli, Guomen, Matryoshka Square and Hulun Lake. A deeper forest line adds Genhe, Cold Pole Village, Aoluguya, Mordaga and the Greater Khingan range.
Grassland and Border Line
The grassland line works best when you slow down. Morigele River is about open views and light, not driving off-road. Erguna Wetland and the Birch Forest need official paths and weather checks. Enhe, Shiwei and Heishantou are useful overnight stops, but room quality, heating, hot water and cancellation rules vary. In border areas, obey signs for photography and drones.
Manzhouli adds a different mood with Russian-style streets, Guomen, Matryoshka Square and the road toward Hulun Lake. Check opening hours and wind before committing to long outdoor time. Genhe, Aoluguya and Mordaga bring forest, reindeer culture and colder temperatures, so they need more layers and more daylight.
Route Choices
Four days can introduce Hailar, Morigele River, Erguna, Heishantou and Manzhouli. Six days can add Enhe, Shiwei and a slower border return. Eight days can include Genhe, Aoluguya, Mordaga, Zhalantun, Arong Banner or Morin Dawa depending on the season.
Food is hearty: lamb, beef, milk tea, dairy, lieba bread, Russian-style meals, lake fish and blueberries. For horse riding, pasture visits, folk-costume photos and shows, check operator qualifications, helmets, insurance and animal-welfare boundaries. Hulunbuir is at its best when the road time, weather and grassland protection rules are treated as part of the trip.
