Zhangjiakou is split between winter sports, Great Wall passes, old trade routes, grassland drives and county folk culture. Chongli snow resorts, Dajingmen, Zhangku Avenue, Grassland Sky Road, Jimingyi, Xuanhua Ancient City, Nuanquan Ancient Town, Chicheng Hot Spring and Yu County can all be worthwhile, but weather and road conditions should decide the order.
Chongli and Snow Season
Chongli is the main winter-sports base. Wanlong, Thaiwoo, Fulong, Genting and Cuiyunshan have different slopes, lodging styles and beginner arrangements. Before paying, check trail level, lift status, helmet rental, coach credentials, insurance, equipment deposit, children's area, shuttle rules and refund terms. Beginners should not start on advanced slopes just because the view looks better.
Snow season also affects roads. Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed rail can be easier than self-driving after snow, while expressways and resort roads may face ice, wind or parking pressure. Keep the final return flexible, especially on holidays.
Great Wall, Grassland and Old Towns
Dajingmen, the old city around Qiaoxi and Zhangku Avenue are useful for the city's pass-and-trade history. Jimingyi gives a postal-station and old-town perspective; respect courtyard boundaries because commercial spaces and local life mix together. Xuanhua Ancient City works for towers, walls and museums. Nuanquan Ancient Town and dashuhua iron-flower performances depend on schedule, safety zones and night transport.
Grassland Sky Road and Bashang routes are for slow driving, not speed. Yehuling and Huapiling directions can be windy, foggy or crowded, and fuel, charging, toilets, food and return points should be checked before entering the route. Do not drive into grassland, set fires, camp outside permitted areas or chase livestock for photos.
Food and Lodging
Stay in Zhangjiakou city for Dajingmen, Xuanhua and Jimingyi; Chongli for snow and mountain activities; Zhangbei or Bashang areas for grassland. Confirm heating, snow-gear storage, parking, hot water, insects, noise and cancellation terms. Food can include youmian oat noodles, lamb, Chaigoubao smoked pork, Huailai grapes and Bashang dairy; check portions, freshness and posted prices.
